Stereotypes Of Young People-Skins

Overview of stereotypes of young people: Criminal, naive, violent, sex, superficial, obsessed with social media, status and popularity, gratification.

One example that I looked at was Skins. Skins is a British teenage comedy, it revolves around a group of teenagers in sixth form. One of the stereotypes shown about teenagers is lying. This is shown when James (Cook) lies about being hit by the car, at the start of season 3 episode 1. This connotes that teenagers like to start unnecessary drama.

Another representation shown in skins is being obsessed with sex, this is shown with many different characters such as, Cook, Effy and Pandora. One example of this is when Pandora is explain to Effy about how much she wants to loose her virginity, this is shown in season 3 episode 1.

Teenagers are also represented as loving drink and drugs, this is shown in season 3 episode 2, when Cook thinks his seventeenth birthday is going to be full of alcohol. This then results in Pandora throwing up everywhere and the girls wanting to leave. However, Cook persuades them not to leave and promises them drugs. Another example of this is when they're all out at a club except Effy, and a girl commits suicide while high on drugs by jumping off of a balcony. This connotes that all teenagers want is alcohol and drugs. This reinforces stereotypes of teenagers in the media.

Another stereotype that's being shown is caring, this is shown when Effy is going through a really hard time and she starts to think about killing herself, Freddie stays with her until she feels better. This has connotations that teenagers aren't just self loving and only care for themselves. This subverts stereotypes of teenagers in the media.

One more stereotype represented in Skins, is violence. This is shown when they all go camping in the woods and Katie attacks Effy who then hits her around the head with a rock. Effy then leaves her there and doesn't tell anyone that she is there. This has connotations that teenagers are violent. This reinforces stereotypes of teenagers in the media. This is also shown when Freddie hits Cooks dad over the head and then he wakes up and Cook pushes him off of the boat.

Teenagers are also shown as not respecting their elders, this is shown when Cook is sent back to live with his mum after being released from prison. He starts to argue with his mother and leaves the house with his younger brother and ends up stealing Ruth's car. This reinforces stereotypes of teenagers in the media as they're normally portrayed as being ruthless and not caring about their elders.
